Mother Nature has two tried and true Look Up reminders for us each and every day, sunrise and sunset. Just in case, you forget to Look Up, she does it early in the morning and at the end of the day. Whether you choose to enjoy your cup of coffee with the sunrise and/or opt to sip a libation with the sunset, take advantage of the beauty and power of these reminders.
Look Up Reminders - Sunrise and Sunset
The Look Up Mantra reminds us all of two things that sometimes we lose sight of 1) Be in the moment and 2) Find the upside. By paying attention to the sunrise and/or sunset, you bring yourself into the moment, perhaps pausing the endless chatter in your mind. Likewise, you can tap into the wisdom of your perspective, finding the upside in a current challenge or life obstacle.
From Quarantine to the Top of the Sun Gate
This time last year, 9/27/2020, I celebrated Look Up Day in Maui from my new home. I was still in my two-week quarantine from a long-distance move from Florida. From my lanai (picture above), I witnessed the sunrise over Haleakala, the ten-thousand-foot Sun Gate. In order to pay homage to Pele (the Goddess of Fire) and experience a sunrise (and sunset) differently this year, I snagged a camping spot as Hosmer's Grove in Haleakala National Park, which includes the coveted sunrise permit. Seriously, I have been waiting for a year for the park to open up camping spots or for a sunrise permit. It was as if I had won the lottery.
Sunrise from the Sun Gate
Above the clouds at 5:45 am, it was cold. Granted, it wasn't bitter Wisconsin winter cold, but it was chilly for me; albeit, I was dressed in three layers, gloves, a hat, and a blanket. However, the early wake-up call, cold temperatures, and wait were well worth it.
