What Does A Mental Health Vacation Look Like?

When managing our mental health, it’s easy to assume you need to lock yourself away and find a peaceful spot you can heal from the stresses of the world. Of course, taking a long soak in the bath, meditating, heading to a yoga class, or just spending time in the garden with your family is hardly “locking yourself away,” but at least it involves a comforting space you feel somewhat relaxed in. The common logic is when you need a break, heading out into the world for a grand adventure is the opposite of peacefully recharging.

But is that the case? Of course, getting out into the world can sometimes require a little more courage than staying at home, but for light mental health strains such as dealing with a stressful job, feeling unhappy in yourself, or having a tough time with the harshness of our world, perhaps getting out into the world and having a beautiful new experience could be great, provided you go with someone you trust, plan appropriately, and don’t venture too far out of your comfort zone. Note that none of the advice in this post should run counter to specific advice given to you by a mental health professional.

If you’re looking to get out into the world to soothe some of the aforementioned worries, then maybe these recommendations could help:

A Slow Pace

Put simply, think about trips where you don’t have to rush around ticking things off a list. Maybe a quiet beach town where you can stroll along the shore, or a small village in the countryside where life moves at a gentler pace can be suitable for you. The wisdom here is to give yourself time to breathe and just be. Wake up when you feel like it, have a leisurely breakfast, and then see where the day takes you. That’s how to do it.

Inclusive & Affordable

Worrying about money can really put a damper on your trip. Look for places that offer good value, where you can enjoy yourself without constantly checking your wallet. All-inclusive resorts or Papagayo fishing charters can be great for this – you know what you’re spending upfront no matter if it’s about the event or stay. Some even prefer destinations where their money goes further. Some countries in Asia or Central America offer beautiful experiences at lower prices, and that means you don’t really have to worry about your purchasing power.

The Chance To Express Yourself

Getting away from your usual routine can be a great opportunity to reconnect with yourself which is wonderful for mental health, so think about trips that let you explore your interests or try something new, but without any pressure. Maybe that could involve places with art classes where you can paint or sculpt, even if you’ve never tried that before, or even a retreat with writing workshops if you’ve always wanted to put your thoughts on paper. This way you don’t hole up in a room, but you get out there and gently learn new skills. It’s a nice way to feel achievement without pressure.

With this advice, you’re sure to enjoy a mental health nourishing vacation.
